Verbs of 1st group or ER ending verbs( ger, yer, eler, eter)


We are back with our new and very important topic that is ER ending verbs. These are the very basic topic. 

There are three different types of verbs in french;

1. er ending verbs or 1st group of verbs

Example: parler 

2. ir ending verbs or 2nd group of verbs

Example: finir

3. re ending verbs or 3rd group of verbs

Example: rĂ©pondre 

To conjugate all types of verbs, we need to remove their ending that is ER, IR, RE and to add present tense ending.

For ER ending verbs

Je        e

Tu       es

Il           e

Elle       e

Nous     ons

Vous      ez

Ils           ent

Elles       ent

So verb will be

Je  parle

Tu parles

Il parle

Elle  parle

Nous parlons 

Vous parlez

Ils parlent

Elles parlent

Some more examples that you can practice to understand this group of verbs 

Adorer(to love), aimer (to like, to love),  monter (to climb),  oublier(to forget),  passer( to pass), penser( to think), telephoner (to call) Retourner (to return) travailler ( to work), danser( to dance), hĂ©siter( to hesitate)

Verbs with Spelling changes

1. Verbs with CER endings

Example: commencer( to start), annoncer (to announce), dĂ©placer(to move or to displace), remplacer( to replace), 


Tu annonces

Il annonce

Elle annonce

Nous annonçons

Ils annoncent

Elles annoncent

We put a cidella below C.

GER ending verbs

Example: manger (to eat), ranger(to arrange)changer(to change),  dĂ©ranger (to disturb), nager( to swim), voyager( to travel)

Je change

Tu changes

Il change

Elle change

Nous changeons 

Vous changez 

Ils changent

Elles changent

With nous we add one E before ONS.

YER ending verbs

Example: essayer( to try), employer( to employ), payer( to pay), nettoyer (to clean)


Tu essaies

Il essaie

Elle essaie

Nous essayons

Vous essayez

Ils essaient

With je, tu, il, elle, ils and elles Y will become I. And with nous and vous Y will remain same.

ELER ending verbs

Example: appeler( to call), Ă©peler(to spell), reppeler( to remind or to call back)


Tu appelles

Il appelle

Elle appelle

Nous appelons

Vous appelez

Ils appellent 

Elles appellent 

With je, tu, il, elle, ils and elles there will be LL and with nous and vous there will be single L

ER ending verbs in present and past : conjugation, Example, Exercises

TER ending verbs 

Example: jeter (to throw), rejeter ( to reject), projeter ( to project)

Je jette

Tu jettes

Il jette

Elle jette

Nous jetons 

Vous jetez

Ils jettent

Elles jettent 

With je, tu, il, elle, ils and elles T will be doubled and with nous and vous T will remain single. 

Verbs ending with E + consonant + ER

Example: acheter( to buy), lever ( to get up), peser (to weight), amener ( to bring someone), Ă©lever ( to raise something), enlever ( to remove )

Tu lĂšves

Il lĂšve

Elle lĂšve 

Nous levons

Vous levez

Ils lĂšvent

Elles lĂšvent 

With je, tu, il, elle, ils and elles there will be an accent on E and with nous and vous there will be no accent.

Verbs ending with É + consonant + ER

Example: céder( to give up), espérer( to hope), préférer (to prefer), répéter ( to repeat), célébrer ( to celebrate)

Je préfÚre

Tu préfÚres

Il préfÚre

Elle préfÚre

Nous préférons

Vous préférez

Ils  prĂ©fĂšrent

Elles préfÚrent

With je, tu, il, elle, ils and elles accent will be changed. É will become È. 

Negative sentences with ER ending verbs 

Ne is written before verb and pas after the verb. 

subject + ne + verb + pas + rest of the sentence 

Example of Negative sentences with ER ending verbs

1. Je ne parle pas anglais 

2. Ils ne  regardent pas la tĂ©lĂ©. 

3. Nous ne mangeons pas de pizza.

4. Marie n'aime pas aller au cinĂ©ma.
